1. What are some of the most promising use cases where generative AI is already executing real workflows instead of just generating text?
Martin Louis: Generative AI is increasingly becoming central to business-critical workflows, moving far beyond text generation. At PayPal, I led the design of an Agentic AI platform that autonomously classifies and resolves customer support issues using LLMs. These systems interpret user inputs, retrieve relevant knowledge, generate summaries, and trigger backend workflows, resulting in over $55 million in annual savings. This is autonomous problem-solving in production environments at a global scale.
Outside PayPal, I advise startups deploying generative AI to automate marketing content, power UX testing with AI-generated personas, and generate product descriptions in real-time for e-commerce sellers. These are tools that are actively driving revenue and retention. Generative AI is now embedded into workflows where decisions are made, operations are optimized, and customer experience is enhanced in ways that scale.
2. How is generative AI transforming operations in sectors like supply chain, product testing, or user experience design?
Martin Louis: In supply chain, generative AI enables predictive planning, dynamic scenario modeling, and automated supplier negotiations. Product teams are using AI to simulate edge-case test scenarios and auto-generate scripts for quality assurance. In UX, AI generates multiple versions of interface layouts, predicts user interactions, and validates flows using AI personas.
I’ve contributed to platforms that leverage real-time behavioral data to auto-tune interfaces and identify pain points in digital journeys. One of my proudest achievements is helping build a self-evolving product knowledge graph that improves personalized search and navigation across millions of customer sessions monthly. Generative AI is becoming an indispensable co-pilot across design, QA, and operations.
3. What does it take to move from language models to action-oriented AI systems that can drive business outcomes?
Martin Louis: Moving from language generation to business action requires three core enablers: context-aware orchestration, measurable intent alignment, and governance infrastructure. First, orchestration frameworks like LangChain allow models to interact with APIs and tools in a coherent flow. Second, systems must optimize for business goals such as conversion rates or customer satisfaction, not just linguistic quality. Finally, everything must be observable, explainable, and reversible.
At PayPal, we implemented AI workflows that combine model predictions with behavioral analytics, triggering backend automations in real time. This goes beyond inference; it creates value loops that learn and adapt. These are systems that reason, act, and evolve with impact.
4. How do you ensure reliability and accountability when generative AI tools are making decisions or triggering actions autonomously?
Martin Louis: Reliability begins with transparent system design. Every AI-generated action must be traceable with logs, versioning, and clear decision trees. Accountability requires built-in constraints, human override capabilities, and real-time monitoring.
In my teams, we employ structured evaluation layers where AI decisions are cross-validated against predefined policies and expected outcomes. For example, in AI-powered support automation, we measure not just resolution time, but also user sentiment, escalation frequency, and compliance adherence. We also implement layered fallbacks and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for sensitive tasks.

In my experience, the strongest AI tools are those that improve customer satisfaction, reduce cycle time, or open new lines of business. I always ask: does this system enable better decisions or automate real work? Can it operate under real-world constraints? Value is defined by resilience and relevance, not just novelty.
7. How should organizations rethink success metrics for generative AI—beyond fluency or accuracy, and toward measurable impact?
Martin Louis: Success must move beyond BLEU scores or prompt satisfaction. It should be tied to business KPIs:
