Ampere Computing shows growth in public cloud, as shown by Liftr Insights data

Ampere Computing, which is expected to go public in the near future, has seen significant growth in the cloud market, according to data from Liftr Insights. The company first appeared among the top six cloud providers in mid-2021, and its presence has continued to expand with annual growth of 443% as of mid-November 2022.

Intel and AMD, which build CPUs based on x86 architecture, are reportedly paying close attention to Ampere as it cuts into their share of the overall market. Liftr Insights has tracked the growth of AWS Graviton, which uses the ARM architecture like Ampere, and has seen 20% growth over the past six months.

The continued expansion of Graviton within AWS is a good indication of interest and willingness among companies to shift from x86 to ARM-based chips like those offered by Ampere. Other cloud providers are opting to leverage Ampere technology rather than implementing their own ARM-based CPUs. Private companies are also considering ARM-based architecture for its potential for performance at a lower cost and lower power consumption.

While debates continue about the performance of ARM-based architecture compared to x86, Liftr Insights data indicates that more consumers are willing to make the shift. “We expect even more interest when Ampere Computing and ARM file for their IPOs,” said Tab Schadt, CEO of Liftr Insights.
