ASUS is taking Samsung to court, claiming that Samsung used its wireless communication technology in phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 without permission. The lawsuit comes after ASUS couldn’t come to an agreement with Samsung about how much Samsung should pay to use ASUS’s patented technology.
The patent in question belongs to ASUS Technology Licensing and Innovative Sonic Limited, which owns all of ASUS’s patents. This lawsuit was filed against Samsung Electronics in the Eastern District of Texas under U.S. Patent No. 10,187,878.
Asus isn’t a big player in the smartphone market like Samsung. They mainly focus on a few high-end phones each year, like Zenfone and ROG Phone.
The problem started because Asus and Samsung couldn’t agree on how much Samsung should pay to use Asus’ patented technology. So, Asus decided to sue Samsung in a court in Texas, USA. This is a common place for these kinds of disputes.
In the lawsuit, Asus claims that Samsung is using essential patents for 4G and 5G networks without getting the proper licenses from Asus. This means they’re using technology that Asus owns without asking for permission.
Samsung has a lot of patents too, so it’ll be interesting to see how this lawsuit unfolds. Usually, these kinds of fights end with both companies making a deal, but sometimes they can go on for a long time in court.
Asus is working with a company called Celebrity IP, LLC in this lawsuit. They’re helping Asus with patents and making sure they’re used the right way.
