If you engage in activities like swimming or scuba diving with your Apple Watch to track your workouts, it’s important to use the “Water Lock” feature. This feature, available on Apple Watch Series 2 and later models, helps expel water trapped in the watch and prevents damage to the microphone and speaker.
- Activate Water Lock: Before exposing your Apple Watch to water, activate the Water Lock feature. This feature locks the screen, preventing accidental taps and clicks while the watch is wet. To activate Water Lock, follow these steps:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the watch face to open the Control Center.
- Tap the water droplet icon. This will enable Water Lock, and your watch screen will lock.
- Engage in Water Activities: The Water Lock feature is automatically triggered when you start water-related activities like swimming or surfing.
- Unlock and Eject Water: Once you’re done with your water activity, follow these steps to unlock your watch and eject water:
- Turn the Digital Crown (the circular button on the side of the watch) in any direction. You will see the screen display “Unlocked.”
- As you turn the Digital Crown, you might hear sounds and feel vibrations as the watch expels water through the speaker and microphone openings.
- Repeat if Necessary: You can repeat the unlocking process multiple times to ensure that all trapped water is expelled from the watch. This helps prevent muffled sounds from the speaker and potential impairment of the microphone’s functionality.
Note: Apple Watch uses sound waves at specific frequencies to push water out through the openings. This innovative technology is designed to effectively remove water from the watch’s interior.
Here’s a slow-motion video showcasing how water is expelled from the Apple Watch using this method:
Remembering that the Apple Watch Series 2 and newer versions support up to 50 meters deep.
Attention! If you use your Apple Watch in a bath or salt water, it’s very important to rinse the device well with plain water to remove any residue that can build up in the holes, making it less usable. To find out if all soap has been removed, use the “Water Block” then rinse, until you see that soap bubbles are not appearing in the holes on the left side of the clock.
