PhotoStudy Announces ChatGPT-Like Chatbot for Math Textbooks

San Francisco-based edtech platform, PhotoStudy, has developed a ChatGPT-like chatbot to provide assistance with the teaching of elementary algebra. By leveraging OpenAI’s GPT APIs, the chatbot has been trained to offer personalized help for students, assess their progress, and even generate quizzes that make use of various multimedia features.

Revolutionizing Textbook Publishing

The company’s solution, MathGPT, aims to tackle the issue of learning loss and provide students with a personalized math tutor. But the platform’s ultimate goal is to revolutionize textbook publishing and make the most out of existing content. “Textbooks are not inexpensive,” says Hung Tran, Founder of PhotoStudy. “But now there is an inexpensive way to get the most out of Project ‘MathGPT.'”

Chatbot with a Difference

“We know that ChatGPT-like experiences are challenged when it comes to Math,” says Raghav Rastogi, Principal Data Scientist and AI Lead for PhotoStudy. The team at PhotoStudy aimed to address these challenges by focusing on the “gateway” subject of elementary algebra and by training the chatbot on a textbook-by-textbook basis. By leveraging its proprietary AI training techniques and the expertise of its human math tutors in over 100 countries, PhotoStudy was able to achieve a high level of accuracy with MathGPT.

Personalized Assistance for All

The company chose the open-source OpenStax online Elementary Algebra textbook, which consists of 10 chapters, 60 sections, and hundreds of learning outcomes. Students can interact with the textbook chatbot in a variety of ways, including asking for help with specific topics or problems, requesting a review of material for an upcoming exam, or seeking a full course overview. MathGPT can act as a teaching assistant or tutor, providing support through text, audio, images, and eventually an interactive video avatar.

Preventing Cheating

PhotoStudy has taken measures to ensure that students cannot cheat with MathGPT. “We made sure that you cannot use our solution for just answers,” says Rastogi. By ensuring that students engage with the material and receive personalized feedback, MathGPT will help them build a stronger foundation in elementary algebra.

Fall 2023 Launch

The company plans to introduce MathGPT with one or two of the most popular math textbooks for the fall 2023 school year, in collaboration with the publishers. Interested parties are invited to reach out to the PhotoStudy team at mathgpt.photostudy.co. MathGPT will be available as both a web app and a mobile app, making personalized math tutoring accessible to students anywhere, anytime.

“We want everybody in the world to have access to a personalized math tutor,” says Tran. “The process we have developed leverages our AI training techniques, and the thousands of human math experts we have in over 100 countries for training data to pull off a very high level of accuracy.” With MathGPT, PhotoStudy is set to bring a new level of personalized assistance to students and teachers in the field of mathematics.
